RADIUS MENSA: ECOCIDE with Stop Ecocide NL
— Conversation dinner with STOP ECOCIDE NL
All around the world multinationals are destroying the natural environment on a grand scale. Tata Steel’s factory has been emitting poisonous clouds for decades, the waters of Dordrecht have been polluted by PFAS dumped by Chemours, whilst the Rabobank is financially supporting the deforestation of the Amazone to turn it into soy plantations.
A growing civil movement wants to take the executives of these multinationals to court, by making committing ecocide a crime. Ecocide entails the destruction of the natural environment by deliberate or negligent human action and literally means ‘killing’ cide ‘our home’ oikos. On 17 April, Babs Verhoeve of Stop Ecocide NL will join the RADIUS MENSA. As a part of a larger movement, Stop Ecocide NL is lobbying for ecocide to be recognised as a crime by the International Criminal Court. If this were to happen, it could force executives of multinationals worldwide to not only bear in mind the financial gains but also the ecological costs of their decisions, and as such it can prove to be a powerful tool to counter large-scale environmental degradation and halt global biodiversity loss.
RADIUS MENSA
From December 2024, RADIUS will start a monthly series of conversation dinners: the RADIUS MENSA. Every last Thursday of the month, RADIUS will host a vegan meal and invite a speaker or initiative focussing on one topic related to climate change and local, personal approaches to it. From everyday activism to climate depression, from the psychological impact of climate reports to the importance of civic initiatives and assemblies, all kinds of topics will be discussed. Come along and join us for a good conversation and a meal!
