Panel Conversation with Helen Weeres and Lieke Jildou de Jong — REGENERATIVE ECOSYSTEMS, WITH A PERMACULTURAL TWIST: ON THE FUTURE OF DUTCH AGRICULTURE AND LANDSCAPE
RADIUS is pleased to invite you to the panel discussion REGENERATIVE ECOSYSTEMS, WITH A PERMACULTURAL TWIST: ON THE FUTURE OF DUTCH AGRICULTURE AND LANDSCAPE. The panel discussion will take place on the 25th of August and marks the closing of the current exhibition FROM RASTER TO VECTOR: THE NETHERLANDS AS PROFIT LANDSCAPE.
The saying goes: “God created the Earth, but the Dutch created the Netherlands.” For centuries the Dutch identity has been inextricably linked to the country’s ability to conquer nature and transform it into profitable landscapes, making it the world’s most efficient processor of land. Yet, in the process of transforming nature into “land”, natural environments, conditions and dynamics were often ignored or worked against, resulting in an exhausted Dutch landscape. The signs of this are starting to show with increasingly accelerating droughts, floods, soil subsidence, heat stress, downpours and crop failures. Most affected by all this is the Dutch agricultural sector, which occupies fifty four percent of the total surface of The Netherlands. In the face of these imminent ecological crises, the panel discussion brings together participants from various disciplines, each active in the agricultural (or affiliated) sector in order to discuss their vision on the future of the Dutch landscape. How can it be transformed from its current state as an extractive, profit-oriented landscape to a more-than-human, sustainable, resilient living environment?
