LISTENING LICHEN

Book Tickets

RADIUS is pleased to invite you to the workshop LISTENING LICHEN, guided by artist Suzette Bousema on Sunday 24 August, marking the closing of the current exhibition WE ARE ALL HOLOBIONTS! Join us for a workshop and an exploratory walk, during which we will collectively study and listen to several specimens of lichen living in and around RADIUS.

Lichens are a powerful metaphor for our interconnected world. They are composite beings consisting of fungi, algae, and other microbial collaborators whom depend on one another for their survival. As such, lichens are often used as an example of the concept of the holobiont—an entity formed by different species that become an ecological unit. In their organisation they are decentralised, co-constituted and continuously transforming forms of life, that question the binary train of thought that modernity has imposed on the many worlds that intersect ours, and can thus be instrumentalised to think of other ways of being in the world that center mutualism and symbiosis.

Varieties of lichens can be found almost anywhere on Earth, ranging from sea level to high alpine elevations, and from very arid to very humid climates. As such, they are often used as bio-indicators and can serve to quickly indicate the air quality at a certain site as well as the condition of the local ecosystem. During the workshop, we will closely study and listen to the sounds of several species of lichen situated close to RADIUS, and engage in discussion with one another on what we, as humans, can learn from lichens.

⌀ The LISTENING LICHEN workshop is part of the ongoing project Complex Individuality by Suzette Bousema in collaboration with scientist Ingeborg Klarenberg.
Suzette Bousema is a Dutch artist who visualises contemporary environmental topics in collaboration with scientists.
